All Aboard: How I got every employee at our school to participate in web content maintenance

Web content goes stale fast, leaving you with pages of inaccurate and outdated information. Large institutional websites can be hard to keep track of and staff turnover only exacerbates the challenge. After years of playing whack-a-mole at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education, we embarked on a rebranding and site migration and used that as an opportunity to implement a web maintenance system with school-wide engagement. In this presentation you'll learn about how we crafted a comprehensive Web Governance Policy, garnered leadership buy-in and participation, and used Microsoft Teams to manage an annual review process that involves 35 staff members and covers over 1000 pieces of content.

Creating a multi-institution Science DMZ network for research

In 2019 UNC Greensboro and NC A&T State University were awarded a NSF grant to create the Gate City Research Network (gcrNet). The Multi-Cloud Approach to Cost-Cutting/Effective IT Infrastructure Data Analytics

This talk will present UNCG ITS Infrastructure Analytics Team approach to "cloud-first" data pipelines, extraction of actionable insight from that data, and presentation of the results in dashboards to relevant stakeholders. Pipelines are established using an on-premises Apache Airflow instance, pushing data primarily into Google BigQuery, but also into Azure Blob Storage. From there, a variety of machine-learning classification algorithms have been written for anomaly detection/outlier elimination as well as metric/status forecasting for VMs, apps, and services. This is accomplished either by executing Python scripts using TensorFlow and SciKit Learn libraries with Google Cloud Functions or PySpark scripts in AzureML within Synapse. Finally, the results are put together in Power BI dashboards for stakeholders at the University. Each path we take is considered in terms of cost and speed, so along with the how, we’ll talk about why we do what we do in our multi-cloud approach.

Moving Up

The path to leadership roles is not well-understood by most. Promotion and hiring decisions are confidential, which makes it hard for observers to gain insight into what it took for someone to move up. Because the path is unclear, talented people may believe they cannot pursue a leadership role.

Early- and mid-career IT staff don’t often have the opportunity to discuss career progression with more senior leaders, or with leaders outside of their own organizations. Bias may play a role in determining who gets the information and mentoring needed to plan their careers.

This panel presentation will provide attendees with an opportunity to hear directly from senior IT leaders about their paths to leadership. Our panelists have diverse backgrounds (both organizationally and demographically) and have had unique experiences along their journeys. Vendor Risk Management - Lessons Learned across UNC system

Vendor risk management (VRM) is a program that all higher education institutions have struggled with over the years. In many cases, Information Security Offices are not aware of technology purchases until they are already purchased or a tight deadline for review. Given the recent incidents revolving around supply chain management, campus senior leadership are asking great questions on how IT and Information Security are managing these risks. The pandemic transformed the college experience for everyone. UNC Charlotte’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Audiovisual Integration and Support for Learning Environments (AISLE) departments responded with rigorous professional development, learning space design support, and resources for teaching in online and blended environments. Recognition that many of our students face social and economic injustice has led to logistical and pedagogical decisions supporting a culture of care. AISLE pursued technologies to support accessible online and blended delivery that would outlast the pandemic and position the university for the “new normal.” The CTL moved professional development activities online and developed needs-based programming and faculty-led seminars to quickly acclimate instructors to online and blended teaching, focusing on successful student outcomes. This presentation covers how UNC Charlotte approached the opportunity to implement these forward-thinking changes.

Design Thinking For Education

Design thinking is a problem solving method geared to overcome wicked problems, that have no right or wrong solution and resist traditional approaches, as “the information needed to understand the problem depends upon one’s idea for solving it” (Rittel & Webber, 1973, 161). While the concept of design thinking within the academic dialogue of design has been under discussion for more than 30 years, its recent adoption as an innovation method has led to its popularity in various disciplines (Wigley and Straker, 2017). Interest in how designers work and think progressively moved from the purview of designers and architects to the field of management and business administration (Elsbach & Stigliani, 2018). Addressing the Digital Divide as an Adobe Creative Campus

The presentation will begin by displaying a postcard depicting a vision of the year 2000. Participants will use Google Jamboard or the Zoom chat feature to answer the questions, what does the postcard reveal about our philosophy of student engagement? What digital adaptions are necessary for the 21st-century learner? The outcomes of the presentation will consist of the following: Recall why digital literacy is necessary for career advancement, describe the Adobe Creative Campus program for higher education institutions, illustrate the Adobe Spark application, and demonstrate how we are using Adobe Spark on our campus to impact how faculty teach and students learn. Simple Solutions that Sparked Big Change

During the Pandemic, NC A&T's ITS received many requests for digital process improvement solutions. Some required long-term investments/commitments. However, many solutions could be found using applications that we already had available at the University.

One such request was from HR with a need to digitalize a form. Keeping to a short implementation schedule, we created a workflow using Microsoft Apps and Adobe Sign that turned a normally manual paper activity into a digital process that took a matter-of-minutes to complete.

Our solution was a big success and received university wide praise. We also received a lot of inquiries from departments asking “How can I do that?” or “How can I create that?” Our very simple solution sparked a lot of interest in improving other manual processes!

In this workshop, we will discuss how we rode this momentum and three things we did to help departments examine their current workflows and implement their own digital solutions.

Automate All The Things! (with Google AppScript)

Google AppScript is a fully hosted (and free) service that you can use to perform automated actions on your Google services (Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, BigQuery etc), as well as interact with other external (non-google) services via API.

The Infrastructure Analytics group in ITS at UNCG uses AppScript as a supplement to our official data pipelines, but AppScript can also be used on a personal level to collect information about your own gmail/calendar/drive activity and contents, or perform a more complex series of related actions.

In this presentation, we'll walk through a few simple examples, as well as some more complex workflows that attendees can implement immediately. Code will be shared via git repo, so attendees can get started with their own Google accounts.

Computerizing Formative Assessment

Formative assessment (evaluation of student progress with the aim of helping the student remedy lack of learning outcomes) will be described, and contrasted with summative assessment (evaluation of student progress to give a grade.)
Summative assessment has already been (mostly) computerized with multiple choice questions given with bubble sheets or online saving a large amount of time and effort for the instructor. (Essay grading will be briefly mentioned.)

With course sizes of 200+ students common in STEM, especially for "gateway" courses, instructor time is not available to provide individual formative assistance. Our computerized individualized formative assessment methodology can provide the assistance needed for students who encounter difficulties in achieving required learning outcomes even if they have the required ability. Easy to Accumulate, Difficult to manage: Remediating Technical Debt

A technical debt remediation project that was already in its planning phase had to be completely reimagined for a post-pandemic return to campus. With a list of 9 compliance metrics needing to be assessed on over 1,700 devices across a 50 department division, the sudden change to remote-work brought on by the global pandemic made accurate inventory management seemingly impossible. Equipped with a department of only 13 technology staff members, we developed a comprehensive schedule and communication plan and roll-out to accommodate the unique needs of 50 different stakeholder departments.

Presentation will include:

Amplifying Chemistry Curriculum with Adaptive and Personalized Learning Courseware

Adaptive learning systems amplify learning experiences by dynamically adjusting content, instructions, assessment, and feedback based on student progress or mastery. The COVID-19 pandemic surfaced the unique opportunity to prototype adaptive courseware innovation across the UNC System, providing alternative online learning materials to support student’s prerequisite knowledge review and problem-solving practice in Chemistry.

We share the engagement efforts taken in Fall 2020 by over 30 UNC system leaders and faculty, instructional designers, IT staff, and graduate assistants from five UNC system schools (UNCC, UNCG, UNCP, App State, NCSU to develop and pilot 12 adaptive learning courseware aligned to Chemistry 1, Chemistry 2, and Organic Chemistry, leveraging the RealizeIt platform and OER content.

We also present findings from a student evaluation survey completed in Spring 2021 by 150 participants on student satisfaction, experience, and preferences of adaptive learning courseware.

Breaking barriers & building efficiencies: A collaborative, engaged stakeholder approach to making a residential graduate program accessible for a deaf-blind student

UNC-CH's Accessibility Resources and Service (ARS) determines reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. A small number of students experience impacts that go far beyond the effectiveness of individual accommodations and which call for input and action from program staff and faculty.

In 2019, UNC Chapel Hill established a Digital Accessibility Office (DAO) which has worked diligently productive partnerships across campus, ultimately creating more stakeholders to help provide accommodation support.

When a deaf-blind student enrolled at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health for Fall 2021, a new communication system would be needed to ensure an effective support response.

This talk outlines the coordinated efforts to address this challenge, describes efficiencies from the timely engagement and of all stakeholders as early as possible, and will share the tools, systems, and structures established to ensure student success.

The IT-Gov SIG was formed to promote discussion of IT Policy and Governance issues among UNC Cause participants. The SIG will address broad issues pertaining to IT governance and policy, prioritized according to the interests of SIG participants. Governance topics will include IT strategy, decision-making, prioritization, and resource allocation, including how to form, lead and work with university-wide committees with governance responsibilities. Examples of focus areas include IT project prioritization and resource allocation, data governance and data management. The Never-Ending Story (of Project Requests)

There are many ways to handle the influx of IT project requests, and the expectation is that IT will undertake as many as possible, given the available resources. However, many of us have realized that requests will perpetually exceed the resources we can dedicate to the work.

This panel will discuss how WCU has changed its project process to include a more robust and meaningful project intake process, to sequence the project requests across campus in alignment with division and university priorities, and to tweak and tighten processes to ensure the successful completion of each project activated. Research-based Ransomware Defense Strategy

News reports continue to highlight the serious implications for ransomware attacks against companies and organizations, including for higher education institutions. We will examine practical security controls that can be effective in defending against ransomware attacks, with an emphasis on examining what the literature says concerning what practices are most likely to demonstrably reduce risk. At the same time as we take such an evidence-based perspective at looking at what safeguards are likely to work, we'll also look at what weaknesses have been exploited in ransomware incidents. Our UNC System Standard 1400.3 on User Identify and Access Control emphasizes the importance of MFA. For example, we'll look at empirical evidence concerning the value of MFA and consider examples such as how failure to have MFA safeguards in place was at the heart of the Colonial Pipeline attack.

Digital Accessibility Opens Doors for Your Campus Community

Many employees send emails, post announcements, edit websites, and make new documents on a regular basis. This digital content must be accessible for all users including people with disabilities. UNC-Chapel Hill's Digital Accessibility Office (DAO) offers services and support to help staff learn how to do this in manageable ways. In this presentation, we will discuss DAO's trainings, partnerships, consultations, and related services.

We offer a campus-wide training program to teach staff how to apply accessibility best practices in their day-to-day work. We developed a Digital Accessibility Liaisons program that brings campus representatives together to advocate for accessibility. We provide consultation services to helps groups incorporate accessibility into their projects. Through these services, staff have an opportunity to stand out among their colleagues. They also contribute to UNC-Chapel Hill's strategic plan to build an inclusive campus community.
